TEXT ON PICTURE:
ATHENRY - ATH NA RIOGH. THE FORD OF THE KINGS - Athenry in Galway is a corrupted form of
Ath na Riogh, "The Ford of the Kings". Riogh, written ri in Old
Irish, is the ususal word for a king. It is believed that Athenry became so-called because here met
the territories of the three Kings of Aidhne, of Ui Maine, and of Magh Seola. The name is certainly
a very old one, and is mentioned by the "Four Masters". After the Anglo-Norman Conquest of Ireland the
Berminghams, Barons of Athenry, fortified the town, whose walls and castle keep still remain. They also
founded the Dominican Priory in 1241.
