DERRY - DOIRE COLUIMCHILLE. COLUMCILLE'S OAK GROVE - In 546 S. Columcille founded the monastery of Derry - for which and for its oaks he is represented as having a special affection - and it is in remembrance of its great patron that the name became Derry - Glencolumkille, Doire Coluimchille, "Columcille's Oak Grove". A more ancient name is Daire Calgaigh, from Calgach, a legendary possessor, the name meaning "the oak-wood of Calgach". By the Charter of 1613 it received the name London-derry.
