TEXT ON PICTURE:
KILKENNY - CILL-CAINNIGH. THE CHURCH OF ST. CAINNEACH - This is one of the group of Irish
place-names derived from Cill, "a church", in this case "the church of St.
Cainneach". St. Canice (Cainneach) was Abbot of Aghaboe, Leix. He lived about A.D. 517-600,
and was a close friend of St. Columba, whom he visited at Iona. In Scotland he is remembered as
Kenneth, several churches (Kilkenneth, Kilkenzie, Cambuskenneth, etc.) having been named after him.
The city of Kilkenny, which has a population of 10,056 (1926), contains Kilkenny Castle, the seat of
the Marquess of Ormonde, St. Canice's Cathedral, a Round Tower, and other buildings of great historic
and archaeological interest.
